The
Study Center of the University of California in UCM
has a special internship program for students that want to work during their
stay in Madrid. Internships can be made in public or private companies,
organizations of different kinds, such us NGO’s, but also associations or
institutions. These internships are volunteering (voluntariado). Most of
them are unpaid.
These
are the requirements for the internship:
- Students must submit a Curriculum Vitae (CV). In our Study Center we can provide a sample.
- Students have to submit a Statement of Purpose with the reasons why they want to make the internship, interests and motivations, which are the expectations, and also schedule availability.
- Internships
in a Spanish company require a good level of Spanish. Is important that
the student realize that the job usually will be run in this language.
Student may also have to write in Spanish. Take that into account.
- Students
interested must be willing to devote part of their time in these
internships and fulfill the commitment with the job. It can be taken in the first or
second semester and they have to last over three months. The number of
hours can vary, depending on the company, they can be from 15 to 20 hours
per week. Therefore, student must be available for this schedule and be
able to combine it with their studies, main reason for being here.
- Student
can obtain credits through this internship, but only if exceeded 15 hours
per week. If the student chooses this option must write an academic paper
followed and assessed by the director of our Study Center.
- Student
will have a tutor in the company. At the end of the internship period, the
student will have to write a reporter about the duty and job assigned,
even if internship is not rewarded by credits.
- The
University of California will sign an Educational Cooperation Agreement
with the company and the student, to make sure the development of the
internship is legally regularized. Once signed the agreement, student must
know that he acquires a series of obligations with the company and also
the university. These obligations are the following:
-
Meet the assigned schedule.
-
Accomplish
the assigned tasks.
-
Keep a
regular contact with the tutor assigned by the company. The tutor will be
available for any help student may need.
-
Is
mandatory to have a private insurance to cover any risk from work activity,
such as medical or hospital services, accidents, disability, etc. (liability
insurance if requested by the company). The insurance that you bring from the
U.S. is valid. You would only need the liability insurance.
- Students
will be interviewed and selected previously by the University of
California (CV and statement of purpose will be assessed, personal honors can be included). Finally the student
will be interview and accepted by a member of the company.
SOME RECOMMENDATIONS
-
Take
your internship in the second semester. Although, the application, processing
and management should begin in
the first half.
-
Write down
a personal diary with all the personal experiences during your internship. This
will be helpful to write the final reporter (mandatory for all internship
students).
-
Be sure that
you will have the time availability to carry out the internship.
